There are several ways to enhance your Personal Training career, but each of them have one common feature, education. Without continued learning your business will remain stagnant and unable to grow. Therefore, if you want your career as a Trainer to flourish, continuing professional development is crucial.
However, there is more than one way to learn....
Get your own trainer
You might be thinking now that you’re a Personal Trainer, what could you possibly need to know from another Trainer. Well you couldn’t be more wrong.
The best people to learn from are those that are a few steps further in your career than you. Whether that be 3 years or 15 years. Other trainers have more often than not been through the same, or a similar journey to you and can offer some advice on how to get through it and avoid the mistakes that they made.
Before you choose a trainer, do your research. Watch Trainers in local gyms, or search on social media for Trainers that have similar values to you and train a similar demographic that you’re looking to work with. When you do find someone, explain your situation and that you’re looking for mentorship along with Personal Training. This way, the Trainer knows that you are there to learn from them and not take their ideas.
You should also know that you don’t have to stick to the same Trainer. As your career develops you may want to work with different clients, or steer your business in a different direction and may require a new mentor that specialises in a different area.
CPD courses
If you want to be a good Trainer then you can never stop learning. A level 3 Personal Training course is a great place to start, but it’s only the foundation. If you want to be a great Trainer then you have to keep educating yourself.
There are several free resources out there for trainers in the form of:
- Books
- Podcasts
- Social media accounts
- Blog posts
- YouTube channels
However, if you want more in depth knowledge, or structure to your education then CPD courses can provide a wealth of education to further enhance your career. Some of theCPD courses that Vector offer include:
- Pre & Post Natal
- Level 1 British Weightlifting
- TRX training
CPD courses can also help you niche down in your business. For example, becoming qualified in Pre and Post Natal training will allow you to work with mothers and pregnant clients which is a big gap in the market.
Develop your business skills
Running a Personal Training business is just that, running a business. Even if you are your only employee. You don’t need a degree in business studies to do the job, but you do need to know the basics.
When running a business you are the owner, secretary, accountant and everything else in between which can be overwhelming but incredibly exciting. On the gym floor, CPD courses are incredibly useful, but business courses can be equally as useful to help you run things behind the scenes. As the fitness industry is currently booming there are hundreds of courses out there tailored to the business side of being a Trainer that can enhance your career. Or, if you’re looking for something more tailored, you can hire a business mentor to help you focus on the specifics of your business.
